The
male nude figure was a favorite subject for Paul Cadmus. The
son of graphic artists, Cadmus studied art at the National
Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York City.
The son of graphic artists, Cadmus studied art at the National
Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York City.
He traveled in the early 1930s in Italy, and his admiration for
the art of Italian Renaissance masters, particularly Luca Signorelli,
is frequently cited to explain the emphatic musculature of his
male nudes.
Cadmus demonstrates his virtuosity in the bird's eye perspective,
foreshortened figure, and striking anatomy of the young nude
in the Wake Forest crayon drawing.
Occasionally censored and often misunderstood, his art depicts,
with unusual frankness and meticulous rendering, the world of
overt homo-eroticism
