In keeping with the Wake Forest University motto: Pro Humanitate, nanosciences research at the WFU Nanotech Center is aimed at addressing areas of pressing need for our planet and its communities. The Center is engaged in a broad range of projects from the development of medical technologies, to green energy technologies, to the understanding of the environmental and ethical implications of such nano-based technologies. While the Center's programs continue to evolve, this gives an overview of our most recent activities.

Materials Design and Synthesis

The core of any nanotechnology/nanoscience effort, is the design and synthesis of new materials. Nanoscale design of materials such as polymers and matrix composites, or the development of entirely new classes of nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, metal nanoparticles, and quantum dots, is the essence of engineering at the nanoscale. The WFU-Nanotech effort speacializes in the creation of new conducting polymer systems:Noftle, Carroll, new variants of nanoparticles: Carroll, Levi-Polyachenko, and novel cage-like strcutures for use in catalysis and fuel reforming: Lachgar. more...

Green Energy Technologies

It aint easy being green... as the song goes. At the Nanotech Center we are developing radical new approaches to power generation technologies such as Solar Cells: Carroll, Noftle, Williams, Thermoelectrics: Carroll, Biofuels: Lachgar. But these must be coupled an equally green balance of system using technolgy development in Batteries: Carroll, Highly Efficient Organic Transistors: Jurchescu, and new Lighting / Displays approaches: Carroll. more...

Biomedical Technologies

There exists no greater challenge for our species than addressing diseases such as Cancer, ALS and MS, as well as the ravenges of modern society in trauma and wound care. The WFU Nanotech Center has several focus groups of nanosceinces applied to medicine including Cancer: Torti, Torti, Levi-Polychenkov, Antibiotic Resistance in Infection, Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration: Levi-Polyachenko, Wagner, Smith, Smith, Biomedical Devices: Carroll, Smith, Smith. more...
