There are three common issues students face in their first week or two of school: homesickness, needing to find their “place” on campus, and negotiating residence hall life. The Parents’ Page will be highlighting a college adjustment issue or topic each week.

Construction will begin this fall on The Barn, a new facility that will provide additional space for on-campus social events. The facility will be flexible enough for hosting small gatherings and larger events for up to about 600 people.

The Offices of Residence Life and Housing, Student Health Services, and Facilities and Campus Services are continuing to work with a local pest management service and the Forsyth County Health Department to respond to the individuals affected with a light infestation of bed bugs. Starting Wednesday, September 1, specially-trained canine units will be inspecting every room on South Campus. Treatments are highly specialized and must be performed by trained pest control professionals.

First-year students visited Reynolda House Museum of American Art on Aug. 23 as part of this year’s summer “reading” project. Rather than reading an assigned book, new students studied a painting, “The Andes of Ecuador.” Photo Gallery.

The Parents’ Page is currently being redesigned and will debut a new look and feel in early September. On the new Parents’ Page, there will be a special weekly message for first-year parents that will cover common issues students face in their first year. The page also will have an enhanced question and answer section, the “Daily Deac” blog, and a listing of helpful links on campus. Parents can also e-mail the Office of Parent Programs any time at parents@wfu.edu.

Senior Ben Comer (’11) and Brett Apter (’10) dreamed up a new business venture last year as part of the University’s burgeoning entrepreneurship program. Their brainchild was mySavu, a website that advertises local businesses that offer discounts to students. Parents can benefit from the discounts too.
